The Vidalia Onion is an essential part of the Georgia Economy and has a special notability as the official vegetable of the state of Georgia. These onions are globally recognized as some of the sweetest and best-tasting onions on the planet. In 1986, the Vidalia Onion was recognized by the state of Georgia as an official variety with a distinct geographic area. This region encompasses thirteen primary counties and parts of an additional seven counties. While onions grown in the whole region are considered Vidalia Onions, Tattnall, and Toombs County are the primary onion producing counties.
