What is Hurricane Insurance Protection - Wind Index (HIP-WI) Plan?
Hurricane Protection is an optional endorsement for hurricane coverage, which can be added to your current crop insurance policy.This option covers up to 95% of the crop value. An indemnity is paid if a hurricane is triggered in the county or surrounding counties of which you have planted farmland. The policy does not cover rainfall, flooding, wind or other weather events in the absence of a hurricane.
- Only one indemnity payment per crop per insurance period is allowed.
- The existence of a hurricane will be determined by the National Hurricane Center.
- Even if more than one hurricane occurs, only one payment will be made per crop for each year.
What is Tropical Storm Protection?
Tropical Storm Protection covers your crop for the county in which your farm in or a surrounding county, however Tropical Storm Protection options cannot stand alone. To have Tropical Storm Coverage you must first have the Hurricane Insurance Protection endorsement on your policy.
- Must be an NOAA-named Tropical Storm to trigger indemnity.
- Must receive at least 6 inches of rainfall over 4 consecutive days.
- Wind speeds must reach 39 mph or greater.
- Indemnity received is 50% of HPA per tropical storm; payout cannot exceed 100% for multiple storms.
- Potential to pay two indemnities in an crop year; total payment cannot exceed the HPA for both Hurricane and Tropical Storm.
